Lotus 72 #2 Hockenheimring 1970
Drivers: J.Rindt
CAR02a
Available now

The Lotus 72, designed by Colin Chapman and Maurice Philippe in 1969 and refined into 1970, is one of the most important and iconic models in F1 history. It was a great technical achievement and was developed and raced until 1976.

Like all the cars made by Chapman it set new standards in innovation: inboard brakes, side mounted radiators, torsion bar suspension, motor air intake positioned high beside and then above the driver's head, wedge shaped nose. The chassis featured a stressed engine, as did the Lotus 49, and the whole package was years ahead of the competition. Driven by Jochen Rindt and Emerson Fittipaldi, it helped both conquer the F1 Driver's World Championship, twice, as well as bringing home three F1 World Constructor's titles for Lotus.

Official Lotus drivers for 1970 were Jochen Rindt and John Miles. Rindt quickly put his talent to good use and thanks to the Lotus 72 potential quickly won the Dutch, French, British and German GPs, before dying in a qualifying crash in Monza. He was replaced by Emerson Fittipaldi, who won the US Grand Prix thus helping Rindt win, posthumously, the World Championship. Lotus also won its fourth constructors' championship.

This model reproduces the Lotus 72 in which Jochen Rindt had his last F1 Grand Prix win, at Hockenheim in 1970.

Just like Colin Chapman's Lotus 72 took the Formula 1 by storm, this first F1 from Policar sets new standards for F1 slot car replicas. This long awaited model designed by Andrew Rowland and engineered by Slot.it, relies amongst other things on an innovative gear box which enables a proper external replica of the Hewland FG400 gear box. The concept is based around an idle axle with a crown/spur gear combination which transmits power from the motor to the rear shaft. Power is supplied by a Policar custom designed FF-150 type motor, with one open and one closed face. The motor, gear box, and axle are housed inside a separate pod, yet another innovation unique to the Policar F1 line, permitting unprecedented levels of tuning and performance for a F1 slot car.

A complete line of tune up parts is available separately, including spare motor pods, axles with different gear ratios, pinions, set screw aluminium rear wheels and racing F22 tyres.

The Citroen DS19 as always based Scalextric / SCX with major changes in the body to adapt to the real model. Significant wheel arches and rear. For me one of the nicest cars that have run on our roads and one of the most successful Scalextric molds.

Citroen HY van made express to this reference in top quality resin. Of course motorized supports all analog slot tracks. No comments about the beauty of the performance, just congratulations Manel, excellent and exquisite work.

Its the forth instalment of the F1 collection from SRC, and how wonderful it looks too! The eagle eyed will have spotted the slight livery change, basically more white on the side pods compared to the Jabouille car - but how many of you spotted the totally different exhaust system on this car? There are other subtle changes to the car but I will leave you to spot those.

As with the previous releases it will be limited to a worldwide production of just 1020 numbered units.

The Rosberg Audi was entered in the 2010 FIA GT3 Series where it was driven by various drivers, with Kenneth Heyer winning the Round at Jarama in Spain. The model features an angle winder chassis.

Sideways - BMW320's and Hawaiian Tropic girls

Due out shortly will be the Jagermeister BMW320's of Stuck and Grohs RCSW41A/B followed by the Fruit of the Loom RCSW42 and then Wurth sponsored RCSW43 cars, however don't think that these releases are just livery changes! The cars feature four different front splitters, three different rear spoilers and two different body styles (front wheel arches) enough, hopefully to keep collectors of BMW's happy! All four models will be available between now and early May.

Sitting on RCSW41A are the soon to be released Hawaiian Tropic girls. Now moulded in a more pliable resin, the girls will be almost unbreakable and will allow them to have logo's tampo printed.

RCSWFIG-009 Hawaiian Tropic Girl - Inna

News from Sideways;

Ford Mustang Turbo IMSA GTX
Mid Ohio 1981
Klaus Ludwig
RRP; £49.95

Although it has been on the cards for some time now, will finally have a shot of the Miller Time Group 5 Ford Mustang from Sideways.

Carrying the part number RCSW46 the model is the car raced by Klaus Ludwig during the 1981 IMSA GTX series and was to heralds Fords return to circuit racing in the US. The never before modelled as a RTR slot car should be with us around June.

Also due to the tail end of the year will be the first of the Lancia Stratos which has also been on the burner for a while. The real car certainly took on a more outrageous look when raced in Group 5 guise. No reference number at this stage.

Finally we have news of a new series of cars to be produced by Sideways. While pictures were banded around on the social media before Christmas, I can confirm that Sideways will be producing models based on contemporary GT3 cars. Lovers of the historic Group 5 models need not worry, as they will not be turning their back on this successful series, with yet another newly tooled model due in 2017. However they do feel that they can gain more sales by looking at cars from the modern era, and one of the cars that is already under development is a model of BMW's exciting entry into the 2016 GT3 series, the M6.

Replacing the Z4, which has raced since 2010 the M6 should make its racing debut at the first major motorsport event of the year, the Daytona 24hrs on the 30/31 January, and I will be looking forward to see this car race at Le Mans in June. There will be of course confirmation of this car and other exciting planned GT3 models during the year.

News from Slot.it;

Ford MKII n.5 3rd Le Mans 1966
Drivers: R. Bucknum, D. Hutcherson
Code: CA20c
Official selling date: February 10th

Ford GT 40 is one of the most famous cars in the Le Mans 24 Hours history: its 'MKI', 'MKII' and 'MKIV' versions collected four victories in a row, from 1966 to 1969. The MKII made its debut at Le Mans in 1965, and was used until 1967. The car was very stable at high speeds once aerodynamic balance of early models was improved. The chassis was a steel semi-monocoque, with a glass fibre body. The brake discs were ventilated on the four wheels.

Visually , the MKII wasn't too different from the MKI. Its distinctive characteristics were the rear bonnet and the engine : the new, big, V8 had a displacement of 7.0 liters (427 ci); the power was 485 hp at 6300 rpm, and the car was able to reach a maximum speed of 330 km/h.

This model , driven by Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson, finished the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the 3rd position , thus completing a historic 1-2-3 podium.

News from Slot.it;

Audi R18 TDI n.3 Le Mans 2011
Drivers: R. Capello, T. Kristensen, A. McNish
Code: CA24c
Official selling date: February 10th

The R18 TOI is a sportscar designed in 2011 by Audi, according to the Lmp1 regulations, to be engaged in the Le Mans 24 Hours and the World Endurance Championship. It is a closed cockpit car, a choice made as a consequence of the rules change introduced in 2011.

Each area of this car is designed for extreme reduction of weight; the minimum value of 900 kg required by regulations is reached by using ballasts.
The carbon monocoque chassis is made in a single-piece; this solution is very light, but also very safe. The gearbox is 6-speeds, electrically actuated, built with large use of carbon fibre composite material. The whole headlights are made with LEDs.

The diesel engine is a V6, 120°, 3.7 liters displacement; fuel tank capacity is 65 liters. The engine uses a single turbo and exhaust pipe situated below the fin. The maximum power is 540 hp with air restrictions according to the rules, and the top speed about 335 kph.

Audi was engaged in the 2011 Le Mans 24 hour- race with 3 R18s. The number 3 was driven by Rinaldo Capello, Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish.

Thunderslot News - Lola T70 Coupe

$

We are grateful to Terry from Gaugemaster for supplying the following information regarding Thunderslot from this year's German Toy Fair (Terry appologies for the picture quality);

I first saw samples of Giovanni Montiglio's new slot car project this time last year, it's great to now see that he is close to bringing his first cars to market. The Lola T70 Coupe was something that Giovanni, myself and the late Salvatore Noviello discussed producing when they came over to the first of the Gaydon Slot Festivals. The car although primarily a pure race machine will not lack in details right down to the Chevrolet script on the valve covers of cars running the 327 inch small block motor. Later releases will also reflect the lack of front winglets allowing him to produce liveries of the non MkIII coupe such as the earlier Aston Martin powered Surtees cars that entered the 1967 Le mans 24hrs.

The chassis of the car takes on the familiar two piece arrangement with a triangular mount with the 21.500 rpm motor mounted at a 2.5 degree angle. Two different hardness of chassis and mount will be offered initially, with the car coming equipped with a medium as standard and hard versions as spare parts. A basic list of spares will be available at launch which we believe to be some time in April with further parts sourced in Italy such as different gear ratios being added during the year.

Note that these pre-production samples are just that and details such as the correct 6 spoke wheel inserts will be fitted to the final versions, however we can expect the final finish to be as good as these samples with excellent paint and tampo application.

Giovanni was happy to share news that following on the heels of the Coupe will be the Spyder version of the T70, possibly the dark blue Ford Powered Dan Gurney car. With the various real life engine and exhaust configurations that the car ran in both Can Am and in Europe, we can expect some cool but quick classic Lolas to race from Thunderslot.

Prices, distribution and part numbers to follow.

Slot.it - 2016 Toy Fair report

Slot.it Toy Fair report kindly submitted to us by Terry from Gaugemaster.

Maurizio was first to apologize regarding the delays of some of the releases due last year that will now spill into 2016. In fact so much from the 2015 list has not been produced that there are actually no totally new announcements for this year although there is still plenty to look forward to.

The Classic DTM's are of course one of these much anticipated additions to the Slot.it stable. On show was the fully decorated final test models of the Nannini Alfa 155 in the factory red livery and this will be joined this year by the orange Bartels Jagermeister car, then later by the Opel Calibra which may just nudge into next year. Also not making the shops until 2017 is the Chaparral 2G but I'm sure it will be worth the wait. One classic open sports car to make it this year will be the revised body worked Matra, and a test moulding of this was on the stand.

Also on display was the first of the Audi R8 LMP's which will be the Limited Edition boxed model in the Le Mans Winners Series. There were also plenty of re-liveries of existing models on hand, which were either examples or final production finishes. Of note was the Rebellion Lola LMP car with the chromed gold effect which looks stunning and I just love the Skoal Bandit liveried Porsche 956LH!

After the phenomenal success of the Policar Gold Leaf Lotus 72, there was decorated versions of the Brooke Bond/OXO Graham Hill car which will be their next F1 release, and as a bit of a surprise the Low Downforce/Drag Lotus that Rindt drove tragically at the 1970 Italian GP in Monza. There of course will many other variations of the Lotus 72 coming out including the first of the JPS cars later in the year. Maurizio was also keen to say that the work on the March 701 F1 was well under way and confirmed that he was 99% sure it will be the STP sponsored car as driven by amongst others Chris Amon. The first March will hopefully be here before Christmas and I can tell you that there are some great liveries to follow driven many driven by F1 legends, but we will leave it at that for now! Finally the Policar F40 was on hand and the car should be in the stores around April time and I'm sure will be very popular with its attractive pricing.

Ninco - 2016 Toy Fair Report

Ninco Toy Fair report kindly submitted to us by Terry from Gaugemaster.

2015 was a year of reconciliation for Ninco, who had all of the their tooling, including the track moved back to Spain from China. It was also the year that they abandoned their proposed new digital systems and made an even larger swing towards consumer R/C products.

So what of 2016? Well I am sad to say that there are no new hard plastic cars due this year not even re-liveries. Instead they are pushing on with the lightweight Lexan bodied cars that they proposed at last year's show. Based on the new fully enclosed chassis that is under the latest Leon's, the cars should prove to be incredibly quick with virtually no weight to pull around. The cars remind one of the Scaley/SCX SRS cars that were around in the 90's however this time round the bodies will be printed on and not stickered like back then. The finish on the large R/C Renault pictured will give some idea of how it will look on the smaller clear shell. Apart from the Renault they will be producing the WRC Ford Fiesta in the same way and the good news is that they should retail at a very competitive price when available later in the year. I discussed with Tomas Prat their export manager that they offered the chassis separately, but also include the two plastic body mounts so one could then use it under any vac-formed bodyshell that matches the wheelbase, and it is something they may consider doing.

Completely unexpected and of interest to the smaller scales on the Forum, were two 1/43rd scale sets on display. Aimed at the entry level market they were so new that there were no cars to show us, but David Cosculluela Ninco's MD did confirm that the first sets will include two WRC Fiestas even though the eagle eyed of you may have spotted the Polo on the proposed box artwork.

Two new NSR releases due this month are the classic GT40 MkII 1966 Le Mans Test car and the welcome return of the Renault Clio.

Ford GT40 MkII

The GT40 was used at the Le Mans Test day during the Month of April in 1966 and although the model has Ken Miles listed as the driver, the Holman and Moody prepared Ford was also driven by amongst others, Bruce McLaren, Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart! I think the car looks stunning in its original white and black finish. This is before the Ford hierarchy decided to throw out the tradition of running cars in their nations colours (the US being white), and bringing their factory MkII's to the race in June in 8 different bright colours.

This cheeky looking car is the first Renault Clio offered for a while and is based on the artwork of the Dutch modernist artist Piet Mondrian. Although listed above as an angle-winder (AW) the Renault will also be offered in in-line (iL) and side-winder (SW) chassis configurations as well.

Last year we launched our revolutionary slot car system, ARC ONE, allowing you to wirelessly create and manage races with a smart device and the ARC app.

Now we take App Race Control to the next level with the launch of ARC AIR. It has all of the features of the original ARC ONE system with exciting new features such as wireless controllers, plus new app features such as weather conditions and race incidents.

Just plug the Powerbase into any analogue Scalextric set, download the ARC app and you're ready to race!

BTCC Development

Also sent to us today is an update on some of the BTCC cars;

As always the Development team have been hard at work and we’ve got a number of updates to show you on some cars you may be interested in. In fact, we’ve got loads but rather than bombard you with everything we’ll try to spread out some of the updates as we hit our development milestones.

Here we have three of the upcoming BTCC cars that I know we’re all buzzing with excitement about. The Honda Civic Type R (C3783), VW Passat (C3737) and MG6 (C3736) are popular members of the BTCC and we think you’ll be pleased with the images below. We always need to stress that these aren’t fully finished examples but we’re very happy with them none the less.
