2016 German Toy fair info/report from Terry at Gaugemaster;

A meeting with Rafael Barrios Jnr is always pleasurable however always too short. Regarding his Slotwings range he will continue to offer new liveries of existing Fly models although some do have subtle tooling changes such as the new rear spoilers on the Porsche 934's and the quirky looking air intakes on one of the forthcoming 917k's. With Fly switching to producing mostly Trucks and F1's in future, it will be Slotwings where we will be finding most of the sports car releases.

*Please note some of the numbers have changed and these are now what is to be produced in the near future.

British Motor Museum - Gaydon will host the 2016 UK Slot Car Festival.

Following a multi-million pound revamp the Heritage Motor Centre has a brand new collections centre housing around 250 vehicles, many of which have never been seen before. The new changes will not only increase the number of vehicles on display in the museum but will also increase the amount of floor space we can use for the Slot Car Festival.

This is great news for the visitor as we intend to increase the number of displays which will cover all scales from HO, 1/43rd, 1/32nd & 1/24th in both analogue & digital formats.
The event promises to be great fun with dozens of free to use tracks & displays for the visitor. A Stunt Car theme and a display of old British slot car manufacturers being new for 2016.

The event will see the Scalextric & slot car auction return for the 2nd year. The ever popular swapmeet area will see dealers from across Europe. Manufacturers & distributors will bring along their latest products for display & demonstrations.

More details about the museum changes can be found here. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-England-coven...kshire-34806726

We will post more details in the run up to the event on Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th May.

We look forward to seeing you there.

SlotForum International to host Slot Rally at the UK Slot Car Festival 2016.

For the last few years SlotRallyGB and later SlotRallyUK have hosted a Slot Rally display/event at the UK Slot Car Festival. This year (sadly) neither of these championships are happening and the festival organisers have contacted me to see if we (SFI members) are able to take over the running of this popular part of the festival.

We need your help to do this!

So far we have secured the loan of five stages or track for the slot rally and ideally we would like one or two more single lane rally stages with timing. However stages don’t work without people to man them! We need SFI volunteers prepared to give up some of their time to help man the stages (explaining the slot rally to visitors, writing times on a sheet, marshalling). Anyone prepared to help out for a day will get free entry into the event along with a special limited edition car and the gratitude of the slotcar community and lots of kids (young and old). If you can’t spare an entire day we understand, but even a few hours from twenty or so people will cover a day's running.

The stages we have secured already include those shown in these photos;

Gymkhana Dessert Stage - Farnham Scalextric Club - Gareth Jex/Lawrence Attrill
Race of Champions - Pendle Slot Racing
Quarry Stage - Nic from Pendle
Jump N Jive - Alan from Oxford Scalextric Club
TBC - Matt Tucker - Rockingham Slotcar club

If you (individually or as a club) are able to assist with a stage/track or helping on the day, please add your name to this topic with a note of the day and times you are happy to help. SFI name badges will be supplied so please include your real name (not just you SFI name).

Cars will be provided from major manufacturers (once I have blagged them) along with prizes for the top two runners each day in an Adult (+16 years) and Junior (-16 years) competition.

SRGB will supply the first prize in the adults competition - the latest SRGB Limited Resin Kit - Audi Quattro Group S Prototype;

A massive thanks in advance to those who can help out - without support we can’t run events like this.

Gareth

Ostorero released the RTR versions of the Lotus 79 Martini Racing 1979 Mario Andretti #1 and Carlos Reutemann #2.

Compared to the previous model of the Lotus 79 (JPS - R. Peterson and Carta Blanca - H. Rebaque) released in 2008, the design of the model has been completely re-done to use the SLS chassis (selective laser sintering) that allows a more accurate reproduction of forms and shapes and an even better performance on the track.

The two versions are limited and numbered editions. 300 units for Mario Andretti and 200 units for Carlos Reutemann. These limited editions include versions RTR and kit, pre-painted and unpainted.

The kit versions will be available from the end of February.

Scalextric Test Track - Blog Feb 2016

$

In this edition of Test Track we focus on a number of out the box improvements our Development team have made recently. Almost all of these changes have been widely requested and we’re incredibly happy we could make them a reality. These improvements should increase performance and we hope to see more Scalextric cars competing at slot racing clubs and on people’s layouts. Plus there’s the usual Development Updates and a tiny bit more on ARC AIR.

Welcome to this month's Test Track blog, bringing you the latest behind-the-scenes news from Scalextric. We hope that those of you who took the plunge with ARC AIR are up and running, enjoying all the new features with the powerbase. For anyone who’s still unsure we’d definitely recommend reading the last edition of Test Track (if you haven’t already!) before making up your mind. Plus there’s a bit more ARC AIR info for you today!

In this instalment of Test Track we wanted to focus on some of the improvements our Development team have been making to Scalextric cars right out the box (or should I say display case?). While we’ve covered PCR and the options that offers, our Developers have been hard at work looking at how we can get the most out of the Scalextric cars themselves without making any modifications (or very small ones).

You’ll see below that there’s been a lot of changes, a number of which will look fairly minor, but when you add them all up, the results are pretty impressive. These improvements should appeal to collectors who race at their local club (allowing their favourite car to compete), but also to those racers who may not even leave the house to race. Faster times and better handling is something we can all enjoy, no matter who the competition is!

The Development team had been investigating and looking into the possibility of making performance changes to Scalextric cars for some time. Looking at the feedback we’d received from well… just about everywhere, showed that many collectors wanted Scalextric to have more of an edge on the track. While PCR offers a huge leap forward in this regard, the Developers felt like they could do more with what slot racers receive in the display case. As a large number of slot racers and slot racing clubs are limited in the changes they can make to their cars, this would help Scalextric make more of an impact on the podium for these collectors.

More detailed feedback was sought from a number of different sources to get specific details on what racers would change to get a better slot racing car. The collectors and experts who offered their feedback were fantastic in guiding our Developers, confirming a number of their suspicions, but also raising new ideas. While not everything suggested was possible, there were a large number of changes that almost everyone agreed upon and so our Development team set about making the changes a reality.

You may be tempted to think that a number of these changes are incredibly simple, surely the Development team just changed a number on the CAD? Unfortunately it definitely wasn’t that simple as our Development team had a number of practical and commercial challenges to overcome to make these changes happen.

We’re all incredibly excited about these changes and hope slot racers will soon be reporting Scalextric cars topping the leaderboards.

There's always room for improvement

Guide Blade

One of the more major changes we’ve made is that the guide blade has been increased in depth by approximately 1.2mm. This gives the new guide blade a total depth of 7mm which increases the car’s ability to stay in the slot, resulting in better handling.

The old, shorter guide blade on the left with the longer, improved guide on the right

Do keep in mind though that the deeper guide blade could impact racers who use older, Classic track. While we always try to keep new advancements compatible with historical Scalextric, there does come a time where a new innovation will conflict with a significantly older product. Of course this is regrettable but oftentimes tough decisions need to be made for the greater good and with the new guide blade, you can always modify the guide itself or remove it for an older version.

Inline Motors

While already present on a select few Scalextric cars, all new cars will have an inline motor fitted as standard. This configuration not only gives better weight distribution for the car but also means that both back wheels receive the power from the motor, with the gear on the rear axle.

The Inline Motor is on the left, showing the gear powering the whole rear axle

Wheels and Tyres

The tyres fitted to the car, out the box, will now have more grip than before. The Development team have had the tool polished to give a matt finish, meaning the tyres come out offering more grip.

However, if you still need even more grip from a different set of tyres, we have now changed all Scalextric wheel sizes to adhere to one of the Slot.it tyre sizes. Changing your tyres has never been easier as you can be sure one of Slot.it’s top performance tyres will fit your car.

The old wheel above with the new, Slot.it compatible wheel below

Body Fittings

To allow slot racers to easily remove or change the magnet we’ve also reduced the number of screws that keep the body attached to the underpan. In the past there’s been two screws at the back, which has now been reduced to just one.

The single screw can be seen on the left (top) with the old arrangement on the right

Not only does this help with the magnet and ease of access for drivers, it also allows racers to easily loosen their body, which is a small change a lot of racers make to reduce lap times. Loosening this screw ever so slightly allows the body to move a small amount, increasing stability and allowing faster speeds through the corners.

There’s also been a change made to the screw post itself, with the collar being removed, allowing the “body roll” to be even more effective.

Bumpers and Spoilers

Previously Scalextric cars had the bumpers attached to the underpan, but this has now been changed so the bumper is part of the body instead. Moving the bumper is another change that assists with body roll, further increasing stability and potential speed in the corners.

Furthermore, these bumpers and any spoilers are no longer glued in place. Now manufactured as a friction fit, both the bumpers and spoilers will help with body roll and mean they can be easily removed.

Underpan

While we’ve already discussed the removal of the bumpers from the underpan, there has been another change here too. Before these changes the underpan used to have a “step” to bring the magnet down to the correct height, with the rest of the underpan at a higher level. We’ve now brought down the whole underpan to the magnet level, which helps with the air flow around the car and with it, speed.

Car Body

There’s even more changes to body too as we’ve also reduced the thickness of the plastic itself. This, of course, decreases the weight of the car which has a direct impact on its speed.

Plus we’ve now moved to “half tub” interiors, which is another big reduction on the weight of the car. While we’ve kept the bulk of the detail in the interior (often considered a huge advantage of Scalextric), the less visible lower section of the interior, where the driver’s legs are, has been removed.

The old full interior on the left with the new, lighter "half tub" interior on the right

For some the reduction in the interior may be seen as something negative. However, as you can see, the key part of the interior is still visible and the “half tub” only really becomes clear on close inspection. We feel this is a small sacrifice for a big increase in performance but of course we understand this probably comes down to personal preference.

Lastly, the plastic along the bottom edge of the interior has been reduced by about 0.2mm (from 1mm to 0.8mm). This is a further reduction on weight, which we’re confident will all lead to a significant performance increase.

ARC AIR Launch Event

As I mentioned at the start of the blog, we did have a bit more to show you with ARC AIR. Back at the end of last year, we held a launch event for ARC AIR in London and invited a number of our friends, from various newspapers, publications and websites, to come round and race. Everybody at the event had tremendous fun using ARC AIR and we have a number of pictures from the event to share.

Development Updates

We have another healthy dose of updates for you to feast your eyes on too. There’s the MINI F56 (C3742) from the popular MINI Challenge series, plus the Porsche 911 (C3732) and McLaren 12C GT3 (C3716) in the fantastic Gulf livery, with new special packaging! As always, be sure to let us know what you think of these samples as we’re always keen to hear any and all feedback.

News from Stryker Racing Slot Kits;

Nissan GTR-LM Nismo
1;32 Scale Resin Kit
Available to order now
RRP £50.00

Stryker Racing Slot Car Parts are pleased to announce their newest slot car kit, the long awaited 2015 Nissan GTR-LM Nismo LMP1 is now for sale!

The 1/1 GTR-LM has gone down as one of the most ambitious race cars ever to grace the track in recent years. It was launched in a multi-million dollar advert at the 2015 Super Bowl and featured a radical front engined, front wheel drive layout, with kinetic battery energy being deployed to the rear wheels, something never seen before in LMP1 racing.

Having missed the first three round of the WEC season due to reliability concerns, it hit the track in anger for the first time at the 83rd running of the Le Mans 24 Hours. Despite clocking nearly 210mph in the speed trap, the car wasn't much faster than an LMP2 car through the turns, resulting in the car lining up at the back of the LMP1 field. Reliability trouble hit all three cars during the race, meaning that none of the three entered finished the motor race.

The Stryker Racing body started life as a 3D print, which was produced by Marco Rizzi of Area 71 slot cars. As you can see, he has done a wonderful job. This has since been further detailed and updated to look identical to the car which raced at Le Mans. Each body is then cast as thinly as possible in resin, so each model is light, strong and still slightly flexible to improve handling.

Each kit includes a resin body, vacuum formed interior and windows, beautiful decals (with all three cars able to be modelled) and rear wing template.

Each customer then is spoiled for choice with regards to the chassis, as we are in talks with Slot.it and they are working on a custom-made, front motored, Front-Wheel Drive chassis which will be available through their Shapeways online shop service in the coming months. We would like to thank Maurizio Ferrari and all of the Slot.it team for joining us on this exciting project. This chassis will require a Slot.it anglewinder motor pod, which will be mounted at the front.

Along with Slot.it, there will be a 3D printed rear wheel drive version available for sale from Stefan Kievit’s ’S-Slot’ team, which will be on sale also in the coming months. This version simply needs the running gear adding.

The decals are something we are especially proud of, printed in Germany they feature many awesome details such as tyre decals, bodywork latch points and driver names. These have been updated since the photos have been taken.

Below is the finished model, as it lined up during concours voting for the Eindhoven 6hour Digital Endurance race, where it finished in first place in the concours.

The kit will retail for £50.00 GBP plus postage and is available only through our website http://strykerracing.weebly.com

The car was entered by American Bob Drake in the 1960 US Grand Prix held at the iconic circuit of Riverside which once occupied what is now prime real estate of the outskirts of Los Angeles. This was the last time a 250F was entered into a Grand Prix, I can't image how the now out dated car did in the race but it's a snapshot of time in North American circuit racing.

OK, it's not the long awaited C7R Stingray, but possibly the last throw of the dice as far as the previous car is concerned? In Terry's opinion possibly the best livery the real car raced in, at Le Mans in 2011 as the Larbre Competition entry. This is a shot Terry from Gaugemaster took of it at the track as dawn broke on the Sunday morning on its way to the GTam Class victory and 20th overall.

The car features all the usual components that make these cars so quick out of the box and it's nice to see the model has printed on it a pretty accurate representation of the real car. They should be with us in the next 10 days (UK).

Brabham BT44
Austrian GP 1974
John Watson
Ref; FS062103
Retail £49.95

The second of Flyslot's Brabham BT44's are now with us. FS062103 is the John Goldie/Hexagon Racing entry for the 1974 season, and was driven with some success by John Watson, who finished 4th at this event. Watson was then joined by Carlos Pace for 9 of the 15 races, and actually ended up with even more championship points than the Ulsterman! Historians may well recall that the team were in fact racing an earlier BT42 dressed in BT44 bodywork but by the time the season had reached the Austrian race they had acquired the latest model.
